Nicholas May
FOUR PAINTINGS FROM THE HALFWAY HOUSE

18 August 2004 - 11 September 2004

On the 18th of August Riflemaker will present four new paintings by Nicholas May. After sell out shows at PS 1 in New York, Victoria Miro and Maureen Paley in London, May has been ten years away from painting after a period of re-assessment and now returns with just four large, powerful new works.

The artist’s working method involves the pouring of enamel onto a canvas placed flat on the ground. Metallic dust and oil is then sprinkled on top, building up layers which result in an array of rich, dense colour forming vibrant, fluid and amorphous forms which emerge like ghosts from the surface texture.
